Broadband is often called high-speed Internet, because it usually has a much higher rate of data transmission than dial up internet. A broadband channel can carry a far greater amount of information than on old fashioned dial up and has the added advantage of being always on and never interfering with telephone lines, unlike dial up where you had to choose to be online or contactable on your home phone. Many telecommunications networks were unable to transmit broadband because of the quantity of data and in the UK BT have undergone a massive upgrade of their network in order to facilitate widespread access to broadband.

However the advantages of Broadband become clearer everyday and the current and potential effects it is having on our day to day lives, let alone in the business sector, are staggering. Broadband is now considered so vital for businesses and gives such competitive advantages that in the 2006 Information Economy Report it was stated that broadband access is as important as basic utilities such as water and electricity to businesses.

The two main kinds of broadband available to the average consumer are ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) and cable. ADSL is the most common kind of broadband but requires that your phone line has been upgraded to receive ADSL. BT estimates that with its upgrade 99% of houses are now able to receive ADSL. The other kind of broadband that is fairly widely available is cable. This requires that your area has the cables laid down already for cable television. If you do then companies like Virgin will be able to supply you with a cable broadband supply. One of the advantages of cable is that it can have the fastest speeds of all of the broadband connections. Other kinds of broadband are Wifi and satellite, but these are usually only needed in remote areas where no cables have been laid. They are usually prohibitively expensive and only used where necessary.
