Can I get Cheap UK broadband
Broadband packages are so common and varying these days that there are offers to suit every budget. In order to get cheap UK broadband it is a good idea to ensure that that you fully investigate the different packages and their benefits and downsides.
Pay as you go
Pay as you go internet can be a good deal if you want to save money by only paying for what you use. There are also options that allow you to pay month by month but have unlimited downloads. The problem with pay as you go broadband is that while you protect yourself from going into a one or two year contract, you will pay slightly more month by month. You will almost certainly pay more in start up costs as most pay as you go plans are based on the fact that you have an existing connection and modem.
ADSL
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line broadband is the most common kind of broadband and it is where you will find most of the deals. The best way to get a cheap connection is to go for slower speeds and capped downloads. The difference for most people is negligible, as long as you are not using the internet for gaming or for a lot of downloads. It is kind of like having a car that can go up to 300 miles an hour when the speed limit is 50 miles an hour, unless you are a racing car driver you never need that car to go at 300 mph. There are some incredibly cheap contract deals for 12 and 24 months that will also include the connection fee and a free modem. It is important to get a modem if you can because this will keep your start up costs low.
Cable
Cable broadband is supplied through the same cable as you get your cable TV. The main provider in the UK is Virgin. Cable is a slightly more expensive option, although many deals will include the modem and connection, as with ADSL. The main upside of cable is that it reaches the highest speeds of all the broadband connections, however you can only receive cable if there is already a cable connection in your street.
Always look at comparison sites as you will find information that you will not on the provider websites, including deals from smaller companies and reviews on value for money and customer service from other users. These can be invaluable and if a lot of people are saying that a provider is bad news it is worth paying attention, as many will suck you in with a cheap starter deal but then abandon you to terrible customer service and technical support once you are an existing customer. It is always better to pay a little more to go with a good provider. This does not necessarily mean one of the big ones, as some of the big names have the worst reputations.
