How does satellite broadband work?
For people in that 2% of Britain who are have not been part of the massive BT network upgrade, it might seem that broadband internet is something only other people can get. However there is an alternative to ADSL and cable broadband and that is Satellite broadband.
Satellite broadband provides an internet connection through a satellite service rather than a ADSL or cable service. The signals are beamed from satellite to a dish in the home of the subscriber and back again. Satellite broadband can reach speeds of around 2Mbps which is nearly 40 times faster than the 53 kbps that is the standard dial-up speed.
However, there is a reason why satellite broadband is the last stop on the broadband list and that is because it has a few disadvantages. The maximum speeds of 2Mbps is significantly slower than the speeds of around 24 Mbps that are offered in DSL and cable broadband. There is also quite a high installation cost as users need to have a satellite dish professionally installed in order to receive it. The other disadvantage is called high latency.
High latency refers to the signal delay that occurs when transmitting data between a dish and satellite. Every time you browse a page, the command to do so is send a whopping 22,300 mile to a satellite in geostationary orbit and then the same distance back to a satellite service provider elsewhere. The satellite service provider routes the request to the internet, the information is exchanged and sent 22,300 miles back to the satellite and then 22,3000 back to your dish. This round trip is almost negligible in noticeable time, it is only milliseconds, however it is enough to make things like online gaming impossible due to latency.
So while it is one of the slower broadband technologies and one of the costliest, the main advantage of satellite internet is that it is able to provide broadband in areas that are unable to get cable or ADSL.
