Which Broadband Should I use?
There is such an array of broadband packages out there it is difficult to know where to start. Here is a bit of a guide as to how to pick the right one.
First step is to find out if your telephone line has been enabled. You can do this by checking online with one of the broadband checkers that are provided free by BT or any one of the broadband providers. There are also a lot of independent sites out there that offer the same thing if you want to ensure an objective answer. Try and find a site that also gives you the maximum speeds you can expect to receive as this will impact what packages you want.
Speed is an important thing to keep in mind when choosing your broadband package. Once you know what your max speeds are- say 4Mbps, then there is no point paying for a whopping 20Mbps connection because you will never be able to reach those speeds. Higher speeds are definitely something that will bring up the cost of your package. However even if your line is able to handle the highest speed connection, it is worth considering whether you really need it. If you are not a big gamer or downloader, then you do not really need a super fast connection. 4 Mbps to 8 Mbps is more than enough to meet your browsing, emailing and video streaming needs. Compromising on your speed limit can give you a bit of extra budget for downloads. On the other hand, if having the best possible speeds is your first priority then it is worth taking a look to see if you can get
Download limit is the other factor to look for. Every time you browse a page you will download information from the net. This kind of download is negligible though and if all you do is check emails and browse a little you will find you only need a low download limit. On the other hand if you want to download music and movies you will find that any limit will get eaten up without you realising it. Some packages have quite large limits like 40 GB but to give you an idea an average album or movie can be under 1 GB but if you download a lot of movies, music and TV as well as gaming you will find this goes surprisingly quickly. If you are worried about this it is a good idea to go for something with an unlimited download limit.
Once you have decided what your priorities are for your broadband, you are in a better position to look at all of the comparison sites on the net and decide which package suits you.
