So, say someone uses their GPS for land locations and has to store hundreds of waypoints in their system. That person better be sure to have plenty of memory. Or say someone wishes to use their GPS at night; they would need to have a digital color screen so they can see the coordinates. So as you can see, it really does depend on the consumer.
However, there are several key features a handheld GPS should have in order to be considered one of the best. They include; being lightweight, plenty of memory, WAAS capability, and water proof/resistant.
A handheld GPS needs to be lightweight for the obvious reason of portability, the heavier something is the less portable it becomes. As far as the memory specification goes, that is relative to the use depending on how many waypoints he/she plans to store. WAAS capability has been around for awhile and will soon be standard in every handheld GPS. It allows for accuracy of up to 3 meters. The last feature a handheld GPS needs is for it to be water resistant. Because handheld GPSs main use is outdoors, weather applies so be sure your GPS is water resistant.
