ScanDisk is one of the most common maintenance tools bundled in a Microsoft Windows operating system. This is an application used in checking the hard drive of your MS Windows-based computer for errors. Once ScanDisk finds an error in the hard drive, it will attempt to fix it.

These errors found inside your hard drive are caused by:

system crashes;
improperly closed applications;
harmful programs such as viruses; and
improperly installed or uninstalled applications.

While it is running, ScanDisk checks the hard disk for defects in its platters. It also checks file systems. It searches and corrects the lost and bad clusters created when a certain program was aborted. Once ScanDisk finishes its task, it provides a report containing the errors it has found and the amount of disk space it has scanned.

It is important to use ScanDisk because it ensures that your data is safe from corruption. Aside from this, it guarantees that your computer performs at optimum performance levels.

The earliest version of ScanDisk appeared in MS DOS 6.2. In Windows 95 and 98, ScanDisk was given a graphical user interface. In this graphical environment, a user can find progress bars, buttons, and information regarding the status of the scan and the errors found.

In Windows 2000 and other later versions of Windows, ScanDisk was given the title ¡°Error Checking¡± under disk properties.

On MS Windows 95 and 98, ScanDisk can be found by going to Start Menu> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> ScanDisk.

To run ScanDisk in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, you need to press the Start button and click My Computer. On the list of disk drives, select the drive you want to scan. Then, click on the File menu and choose Properties. On the Tools tab page, click on the Check Now button.

You should ideally use ScanDisk once a month to ensure that your PC is free from errors.
