"Free satellite TV" is something a lot of people seem to be searching for on the internet these days. The important questions is: Is there really any way to get free satellite TV? There is no simple "yes" or "no" answer to this question since there are many things to consider.
There is something called "Free-to-air" or FTA satellite TV which is apparently free and legal. However, programming content on Free-to-air satellites is very limited, so don't expect to see MTV, HBO, The Discovery Channel or ESPN there. You'll also have to be somewhat of a "techie" person since you'll have to set up your own Free-to-air receiver and dish antenna. That is, unless you want to pay someone else to do it for you, but that kind of takes the "free" out of it, doesn't it?
Then there are the shady characters who sell those books on the internet that supposedly tell you how to get satellite TV on your PC. Since this is a family-friendly article, I won't write the first word that springs to mind when I see those offers, but let's just say that it's a load of something that does not smell too good. There is no way to get satellite TV on your PC -- they are two completely different things. It would be kind of like saying "make telephone calls using your washing machine."
There is indeed a lot of free video content available on the internet, including some broadcasts from various TV stations around the world, but watching those on your PC has little to do with a satellite. Using the word satellite must be a good marketing tactic for the people who sell that stuff since it never seems to go away.
For those who are seeking to receive programming from DISH Network or DirecTV without having to pay for it, the good news is that it can be done. The bad news is that it is illegal and if you are caught, you might end up facing some pretty stiff punishment.
Sure, there are tech-savvy people out there who know how to hack satellite receivers and receive DISH Network or DirecTV without paying for it, but besides the risk of getting caught, there's the fact that those two companies are always working to put a stop to it. Just recently, we received new "smart cards" in the mail from DISH Network that we had to insert into our satellite receivers in order to keep them working.
This is one method the satellite companies use to stop the illegal reception of their signals. The "smart cards" contain the new codes that are required to view the signal from the satellites because the encryption codes have been changed.
People with illegal satellite systems will not be able to view DISH Network programming
unless they have the know-how to modify their equipment or hire someone who is in the business of providing "free," but illegal satellite systems. But once again, paying someone else to set you up with an illegal system does not sound "free" to me, and I suspect people in that business are not too likely to come out and
upgrade your system when the codes are changed unless they are paid.
There may also come a time when the satellite TV providers come up with a new method to secure their broadcasts and make it much harder to receive signals illegally. That would leave anyone who bought an illegal system to watch "free" satellite TV with a fancy-looking, but useless piece of electronic trash.
So much for "free satellite TV."
