Not all that long ago many people were stumped by their own VCR (video cassette recorder). There were millions of jokes and funny references about the complexity of programming one to record a television show. In fact, most people held their breaths as they rewound the tape to see if it had actually worked.

Today that scenario is almost laughable. In less than twenty years the VCR has become a dinosaur and today everyone is in love with their DVR (digital video recorder). Why? Well, lets do a quick comparison.

A VCR required a tape; this tape had to be kept clean and dust free and could become entangled in the various spools and gears of the VCR, which meant it was irredeemably ruined.

We have just discussed the difficulties and complexities of using a VCR to perform a single recording operation. Even those that did go off without fail might suffer from static, a background humming sound, or an irritating line across the top of the screen if there happened to be any kind of dust, debris or interference with the machinery.

Finally, the quality of a VCRs tape degrades over time, and that once crisp and clear movie could eventually become a fuzzy and blurry viewing experience.

Now, enter the DVR. With a few simple clicks of the remote control a user could program their DVR to record an entire season of their favorite television show (without doing any duplicate recordings!) or a special program or event. Additionally, with a satellite subscription the viewer could order a pay per view event or movie and also use the DVR to record that and re-watch it as many times as they would like.

Do the recordings in the DVR degrade like VCR tapes? Absolutely not! It is a digital recording which is safely retained in the memory of the machine, much the same as a photographic file on a computer. It never loses its clarity or quality.

So, it is easy to see how and why so many people prefer a DVR. The next significant issue is the availability of DVR equipment with enhanced capabilities. This is where satellite television providers really strut their stuff. They were the first to create and make available an HD DVR, which is a high definition digital video recorder. They did this because they excel at providing HD programming and wanted their customers to be able to record such crystal clear images and sound permanently.

It should be noted that satellite providers make around seven thousand HD programs available each WEEK. This clearly means there is a lot to be recorded in such a superior format. Additionally, it is the satellite providers who created and implemented a program whereby a customer can use their mobile device to actually contact their home DVR and schedule a recording. In fact, they can indicate which DVR in the house will perform the operation!

Obviously, the satellite providers understand the power and popularity of the DVR and work hard to ensure that customers get to put theirs to optimal use for their entertainment needs.
