So you finally bought yourself an RV and everything is going just fine, but there is one little problem. You have a spot for a TV but you don't have satellite TV installed on it. Before you run down and get a system installed on your baby, you want to make sure that you fully understand all the options and types of systems available,so you get just what you wanted when the job is done.
As far as the hardware is concerned, most all of the satellite systems are pretty much the same. The dish itself is compact now, so thats no problem any more and the electronics and hardware are also compact to so thats all no problem. Remember one thing though. The dish itself has to be set up and taken down every time you drive your RV so bear that in mind before you run down and get one.
You can have a system installed or do it yourself if you want to. Basic kits can be purchased at any of your local stores that carry this sort of thing. As an RV owner though you have probably already seen them at your RV service center, or RV supply store. There are alot of options on the dish itself and the more you spend, directly corresponds to what you get. They range from the single LNB dish to the mobile dish that automatically tracks the satellite for you.
Remember that the dish has to be pointed fairly accurately in the direction of the satellite so it can properly pick up the signal. Satellite signals when received are fairly weak and must be amplified by your system, so accurate tracking is important. Mounting your dish and how and where you do it are also something to consider. There are several different styles of mounts so its best if you have a look at some to see for yourself what you think is best.
If you are physically impaired though, a roof mount might not be your best choice, because of the fact that you have to climb up on the roof to set it up. One good plus of the roof mounted system, is that it is up and out of the way, where a tripod system is out in the open and can be stolen. Also a dish mounted on the ground with a tripod system is vulnerable to signal interferences from people parking or walking in the way of your signal.
There are side mount and even ladder mount systems out there so have a look at them all before you decide which is best for you. If you decide to go with a tripod try to make sure you get a sturdy one that isn't going to give you any trouble. Take it out of the box and set it up and take it down a couple of times in the store to make sure it is what you want and make sure it has some sort of anchor system for holding it down when the wind blows.
The next component of your system is your receiver. The best place to mount it is close to the TV so you use as little cable as possible but if this isn't possible you can just mount it anywhere. One big thing to consider in a receiver is the type of remote control you end up with.
With the infrared channel changer you have to be able to see and aim the controller at the receiver to use it. The other type uses a radio wave to operate the receiver and change channels so you don't have to aim it at the receiver to use it. So knowing where you are going to mount the receiver is a great help before you purchase a system.
