It's no secret that cable TV was once the best solution for the discerning viewer. At one time, cable companies offered viable alternatives to air-to-ground programming, limited as it was. However, that is no longer the case. Today, cable companies seem to be dropping like flies. They attempt to incorporate additional benefits to tempt consumers into coming back into the fold, but they have been largely unsuccessful. What's behind the looming demise of the average cable company? Actually, there are several factors at work here.
Price Cable companies are expensive; there's no way around this truth. For the price, you gain access to relatively few channels. The channels you do get are humdrum, run of the mill. You will not enjoy any specialty programming and you can forget sports programming, as well. However, if you're willing to pay a bit more each month, they'll throw in a couple of movie channels and maybe a few specialty networks. Of course, satellite providers beat this offer with tremendous ease.
Channel Lineup The lineup of channels offered by cable companies is also a subject of derision. For instance, with a satellite provider, you can have up to 250 channels, plus HD channels, special sports programming, movie channels like HBO, Starz, Cinemax and more. Cable companies might offer you half of what satellite providers do, but you'll pay an excessive amount for that privilege. If you want HD programming or all the movie channels, expect to tax that bank account heavily. While cable is relegated to providing only a handful of channels at any given time, satellite providers are upping the ante on a regular basis.
High Definition If you have a high definition TV set, chances are good that you want to put that set to use, right? However, if you are stuck with cable programming, that might be a bit more difficult than you expect. While satellite TV offers more than 100 channels (200 soon), cable companies offer only a pittance. Cable companies seem to think HD programming is a fad and barely give a nod to the technology. Satellite providers, on the other hand, have made improving HD programming and HD access one of their top priorities. As such, the industry is booming, though the local cable companies seem to be falling far behind.
Customer Satisfaction While customer satisfaction levels hinge largely on the factors mentioned above, they also hinge on customer service, perceived value for their dollar and more. Cable companies suffer abysmal customer satisfaction ratings just look at the droves of consumers leaving the cable company behind. Satellite TV customers, however, find that they are much more satisfied with the programming, the price they pay for access and the benefits of owing a satellite system, as opposed to a cable box.
Satellite TV is the death knell of the cable company, though cable seems to be taking its time during its death throes. However, the die is cast and cable companies seem unlikely to catch up to satellite providers in terms of value and selection.
