EchoStar Communications corporation, the parent company of DISH Network, is based in Meridian, Colorado. DISH Network is a digital broadcast satellite (DBS) service that supplies satellite television and audio programming to private homes and businesses in the United States. Launched in 1996, DISH Network, along with DirecTV, is a chief competitor of cable television providers throughout the country.
Formed in 1980 by Chairman and CEO Charlie Ergen as a distributor of C band TV systems, EchoStar launched its initial satellite EchoStar I on December 28, 1995. The risky endeavor of launching EchoStar I from China proved to be fruitful after a number of failed attempts at commercial satellite launching had gone sour. Within the same year as this successful launch, EchoStar created the DISH brand name to market its household satellite TV systems. EchoStar chose DISH, an acronym for Digital Sky Highway, to represent its new satellite service.
In-flight satellite TV broadcasting on the U.S. airline SONG was the first service provided by DISH Network in 2003. Upon its inception, DISH Network was poised and ready to partner with other satellite corporations. In 2004, DISH selected music channels from Sirius Satellite Radio and added these to its lineup of audio-only channels. This lineup previously included Muzak audio services and was provided for both households and businesses. Initially, DISH was partnered with Starband to include its broadband satellite Internet services in addition to its television services. This partnership ended in 2003 and DISH created new corporate agreements with various local telephone providers to cross-market DSL and DISH Network services. As recently as June 2006, DISH Network contracted with WildBlue for satellite broadband delivery.
DISH Network has been enjoying great success. In the January 4, 2006 announcement EchoStar revealed that it had surpassed over 12 million paid subscribers. Within the past five years, DISH Network increased its new customers to over 6.74 million and which, during the same time period, surpasses all TV and cable company competition.
A informative highlight of the DISH Network is its show titled Charlie Chat, a news show broadcasted to inform viewers about upcoming hardware, programming events and new channels. Charlie Ergen, DISH Networks CEO and Jim De Franco host the live call in and Q & A show. In commemorating the 10th anniversary of the launch of DISH Network, the two hosts aired a special 90 minute edition of Charlie Chat.
The DISH Network boasts over 30 million viewers in 12 million households subscribing to the Network at one point or another since its launch in 1996.
Since 2005, DISH Network has had its share of grueling court battles and agreement mishaps with various Networks competing for programming, delivery and distribution. The disputes are often financially based and arguments over revenues earned between the networks and DISH satellite.
These disputes are exemplified by the January 1, 2007 between DISH and Turner Broadcasting System.
We are working hard to negotiate a fair contract with Turner Networks and CourtTV, said Eric Sahl, senior vice president of Programming for EchoStars DISH Network. But we must also protect our customers from unreasonable demands. It is not fair to ask our customers to pay a DBS premium for a channel owned by the second largest cable operator, Time Warner. We take pride in offering consumers the best value for pay TV service in the industry, and we remain committed to keeping our cost structure low to the benefit of our customers.
