Dish Network satellite receivers offer an awesome array of options and features that are complex and impressive to the viewer of average intelligence with some specific features that could be better understood by electronics engineers. The receivers are complicated and intricate which can cause a problem when laypersons attempt to understand the jargon that is used to describe the functions of the receivers.

There are five types of receivers and all have certain features in common. Every receiver has a satellite tuner which allows the user to select the channel desired for viewing. The machine decompresses this channel, decodes it and sends it to the users TV set. Remote controls are used to access all features of the receiver as well as having the ability to control up to three external components of the users home entertainment system. This feature, for example, enables the viewer to use one remote to operate the DISH Network, adjust the volume on the TV and utilize a DVD player.

All DISH Network satellite receivers are equipped with software that is based on the Dish Interactive Electronic Program Guide. The Electronic Program Guide allows the viewer to scroll through interactive television listings on the screen to view the options available and make decisions about which programming to watch. With this technology, it is possible to view listings for programming up to nine days in advance (on some models). The listings contain the name of the program, who stars in it, when it was created and often gives the viewer background information on the program.

Included in the Electronic Program Guide are Parental Control Locks which allow the owner to limit access to the programs children can watch when the owner is not present.

Extra features available for the Dish Satellite Receivers include dual television capability, digital video recording, and HDTV.

Dual television capability allows the viewer to send separate television signals to two different televisions within the same household. This model includes an additional satellite tuner and an extra remote control specifically designed to accompany the added television. This feature enables each satellite tuner to be hooked up to its own TV set and commanded by its designated remote. This feature accomplishes the same outcome of having two separate satellite receivers without the additional hardware.

Digital Video Recording refers to the technology of recording television programming at the whim of the viewer, to be watched at a later date or more convenient time. This programming is stored on a hard drive within the receiver which eliminates the need for video cassettes or writing to DVDs.

High Definition Television provides the viewer with a greater viewing area, a higher resolution picture, enhanced colors and a generally higher quality viewing experience, similar to the experience of viewing a movie in a movie theater. Dish Networks HDTV receivers receive the high definition television programming and transmit this information via satellite and beam it to the viewers television. At present, there are approximately 30 channels of high definition television broadcasted on Dish Network. The high definition receiver also has the capability to transmit standard television and the viewer does not lose the amount of channels and programming available in other Dish Network systems.
